Bloganuary 7, 2024 | a different approach

Dear World,

Define the adverb, differently

1.
in a way that is not the same as another or as before.
“we work differently from other developers”
2.
in varied ways; diversely.
“differently coloured pens”

There have been many situations where, in afterthought, I’ve said that I wished I did things differently or that I wish I looked at the issue differently. However, wishing and doing are two different things.

One of the sweetest realities about life is that second, third, and fourth chances exist for us to actually do things differently. Additionally, situations often repeat themselves and are manifested similarly for us. It’s almost as though life is granting us the opportunity, on purpose, to relive and redo – but from a different approach.

If we pay close attention, we’ll realise how often repetitions and do-overs actually occur. It’s then up to us to apply the different approach that we think we should’ve done or that which we feel we should resort to, for better outcomes and being an all-round better human.

There are many things I’d do differently in my life. To get through that list, I’d be writing a book. Do I have time for that? No. So, I’ll stick with what might possibly be the most cliché response ever.

Assuming that this difference is to make life better and improve my personal and professional development:

– Instead of looking at the glass as being half empty or half full, I’ll see it for what it is – having something in it.

– I would also remind myself that even though the cards dealt mean that something is in the glass, it doesn’t mean that I need to drink from it.

– I am well within capacity to alter the situation. This includes changing the substance to something more suitable, changing the glass, and filling it with whatever is appropriate for my life.

– I also tend to think that the glass always has water. It could be juice, it could be wine. It could be something totally different. The substance will determine how the situation is digested.

Differently, I ought to be looking at things for what they are – not what they were or what they could be. Granted, looking towards the future of ‘could be’ is not a bad approach. It only requires applying the work needed to achieve that goal. This view also includes changing the situation if it doesn’t quite suit me in this current moment.

Lesson

Looking at life and the situations it consists of through a different lens is the requirement to doing things differently for an improved life. Truthfully, sometimes our glasses are old, and the lenses are blurred and scratched up.

Perhaps we’re in the dark, and our lenses are actually made to protect our eyes from the sun. In those situations, we need to take the shades off. Maybe we need a new prescription for our lens.

The point is that changing our approach to life is not a bad thing.

What would you do differently?

Signed in pensive thought,
