Trisha Roz

The stage name, Trisha Roz – a name given to one, Patrice Comrie – is a fusion of her family nickname, Trisha, and the name Rose, which was acquired while she lived in hall at the Mary Seacole Sorority.

We met in our first year at the University of the West Indies. I recall our freshman sorority group participating in a singing contest against the other halls of residence on campus. The night before our competition, I was shouting at the top of my lungs for some sisterhood bonding exercise and she was sure to tell me to take it easy on my voice because we had to be in top form! haha!

A few months after initially meeting, I recall being in my dorm room and hearing a melodious voice singing “At Last” by Etta James. The sounds appeared to be in a loop as she was rehearsing for a performance. I knew it was her but I didn’t follow up, I just listened as she made my hairs stand on end.

After that, we became friends and the rest is history.

I asked her a while ago if she would like to be featured on my blog and she said yes! So here goes.

Why the name Trisha Roz?

“I am affectionately called “Trisha” by my family and close friends and “Roz” comes from the name “Rosebud”, given to me while I was resident on the Mary Seacole Hall at UWI, Mona.”

How would you describe yourself?

I’m passionate…about life, family, friends, music; a little pedantic at times; I’m a woman of my word…a woman of faith;

I’m guided by the philosophy, “nothing tried nothing done”.

How long have you been singing professionally?

“I’ve been singing professionally for years now but I only started singing my own music professionally around 2 years now. ”

She has performed at weddings, corporate events, gospel events, and cultural events. As a Montegonian (hails from the city of Montego Bay in the parish of St. James) most of her performances take place in the western end  of Jamaica.

Do you perform solo or are you accompanied by a band?

“I usually perform with a guitarist, who also does background vocals and 1 or 2 additional supporting vocalists.”

I was and continue to be inspired by their soulful voices, lyrical content and positive message in their timeless music.

Which artiste(s) would you like to perform with and Why?

“Beres Hammond. Simply because I’ve never heard anyone sing live and sound exactly like the studio recording… I think I could learn a lot from him.”

The man’s voice is just butter.

This songbird, who has been singing since the age of 9, has never received voice training. She thrives on raw talent, lots of practice and the support from her family and friends.

In the next 5 years, where do you see yourself as a musician?

“I see myself doing music full time, travelling the world and bringing hope and happiness to whomever I meet along this journey.”

Play any instruments?

“Not yet, but I’d like to play the keyboard one day.”

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned on your musical journey?

“I’ve learned to be true to myself and to stay true to my message.”

As I reviewed our questions and response session, I heard Trisha speak of her message. So I got to inquiring and the answer was pretty simple.

Her message embodies what I like to call the ELF principle:

Empowerment

Love

Freedom

What I didn’t realise (purely coincidental, by the way) is that there’s an ELF Awareness framework in the English Language. Some basic research has revealed to me that ELF says that there is no unique instructional approach to teaching and learner…but there is a holistic integration of the learner in the the teaching and learning process.

Trisha studied the languages and did a great deal of linguistically related courses in college. Additionally, her day to day engagements ensures that her audiences learn based on how they engage the material presented. She allows people to have their own level of connection with the material.

What’s your academic and professional background?

“B.A. in Spanish, Minor in French; Modern language Teacher/Tutor + Immigration Official for 8 years + Entertainer”

Technically half of it includes some sort of language!

Even more remarkable is that Trisha finds joy when…

…people walk up to me after a performance and say they were [connected to and] inspired by my message.

Trisha shares that music soothes my soul and that performing makes her feel alive

It’s like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be in that moment – doing exactly what I was born to do.

What advice would you give to an aspiring musician wanting to kick start their career?

Just do it!

Trisha is currently working on her EP which should be launched sometime next year.

Though I focused on her life as a singer, Trisha has had her fair share of struggles.

But.

Not one to focus on negative moments in her life, she is a beacon of light, a breath of fresh air and she is one with beautifully twittering birds! In my most humble opinion, she is definitely one to watch.

I have seen and heard her in person. That woman got some pipes! The fact that she has never been a recipient of voice training says so much. Imagine what she will sound like when she gets that kind of training!

I imagine that we’d have to set up shop for our goose pimples and hairs that unconsciously stand on end!

This singer and songwriter continues to make strides. She consciously improves her craft, shares her message in song and spreads her wings.
