Winning the Lottery: A Financial Perspective

Dear World,

I often think of the saying, “if you don’t have a ticket, you don’t have a chance”, as the tagline for a series of lottery games in my neck of the woods.

Though I quite like it because it suggests that you should give yourself a fighting chance — not just at winning the lottery, but in all spheres of your life — I have never bought a ticket to give myself a fighting chance at winning a ‘truck load’ of money. It would be great if I’d buy and win! This, even after all necessary taxes are deducted. After all, that addition would be x amount more than I previously had.

However, it’s a game of probabilities, right? Many people purchase lottery tickets in a day, and I’m quite risk averse when it comes to calculating that type of ratio. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack type of chance. Additionally, I feel like it opens the door to another vice and potential addiction. Can’t afford that. Not in the current world we live in.

I probably never will buy a ticket…but never say never. I really don’t know what will happen in the future where I may buy myself that ‘fighting chance’.

So, let’s say that I do buy myself a ticket and I win the lottery. What ever would I do? 🤔.

I can tell you right now that I won’t be all self-righteous and give to others first. Nope. I believe in helping self in order to eventually help others.

Life and Financial Literacy Lesson

I will pay myself first.

It’s a financial strategy that emphasises the importance of prioritising one’s own savings and investments before spending money on other expenses and helping others. So, pay self, first, handle bills, settle any debts that may be present, and then I’ll pay it forward and help others. Once I am secure, then I will set some aside to help others.

People often say that takes cash to care in the context of charity and development work. It’s true. However, charity starts at home and that’s where I’m at.

My next thought is, “will I give myself a fighting chance and buy a lottery ticket?”, If you’ve never bought one, will you?
