Dear World,
Today’s daily prompt is interesting, to say the least. It asks, “You’re writing your autobiography. What’s your opening sentence?”. Now, I won’t go revealing too much creative ideas. So, all I’ll say is that my first two words would be,
“Dear World”.
For as long as I can remember – perhaps since inception – I open most or all of my blog posts with that greeting.
Hi, if you’re new here, I go by The Suburban Girl JA®, and my space here goes by the same name. At inception, this cute little corner of the internet was called ‘Love Letters from a Girl to the World’ and it has seen many a transition since then until I landed on what we have today.
Why this specific name and why it’s former names? To be honest, I had prickly experiences after leaving my comfort space of peace that I dubbed ‘Suburbia’, and I was moved to write and share the experience while intertwining some lessons. I wanted to feel like I sat in front of the world and all its people while I tell my stories – sometimes exaggerated, but never false. There was a love-hate relationship that I had with the world as I perceived it, and it was my responsibility to tell the people of said world what happened.
Read my first ‘Love Letter’ to the World: Love letter #1
This has made quite nostalgic. I published that on January 19, 2013! As you read, I hope you spot the growth in the writing, and maybe you’ll understand the quirkiness of the The Suburban Girl JA®.
But yeah, that’s it, really.
These days, I liken my “Dear World” to the stylings – just a little bit – of Lady Whistledown as she informs the Ton of the latest gossip. She says “Dearest Gentle Reader” with a mission to encourage gossip and maintain a certain culture while I say what I say to continue my love letters to the world; telling my stories of the experiences I’ve had, and what I’ve learned.
As such, it makes perfect sense that my first two words would be “Dear World”.
Next to that, I absolutely must pull life lessons!
Life Lessons Since the First Love Letter
My Identity through consistency
Opening with “Dear World” shows the power of good rituals. Small, (sometimes) consistent choices can become part of your identity and storytelling voice. That’s evident for me! It’s a reminder that growth often comes from honouring the habits that ground us.
Embracing evolution
The journey from “Love Letters from a Girl to the World” to The Suburban Girl JA® reflects how names, projects, and identities can evolve. It teaches that change isn’t failure. Instead, it’s refinement, and each transition carries lessons about who we are becoming. Trust me when I say that the times I paused blogging indefinitely and returned with a change here and there felt a lot like failing and not gaining reach. However, I learned that I started doing this because I just wanted an outlet. With each change, I gained more eyes on my musings and I love it! Change and evolution are good!
Identity is not static
It is shaped by consistency (no matter how topsy turvy), evolution, discomfort, and reflection. By writing “Dear World,” I remind myself and those who read my blog posts that storytelling is both a personal ritual and a dialogue with the wider world. This is especially true when I share contributions from folks I invite to guest appear here.
So, thanks to engineers of the daily prompt. Now I am in deeper thought on what my autobiography will look and sound like.
What about you? What would your opening sentence be for your autobiography?
Signed,
The Suburban Girl JA®

I really LOVE the thought you put into this! I also love that you wrote about consistency. I love your writing skills and yes we all grow in the writing. This is beautiful. Keep it up! I answered with two different possibilities .
