Why We Complain: A Reflection on People and Human Nature

Dear World,

If there’s anything that I complain about in this life, it’s people.

As much as I often preach that you shouldn’t expect yourself from others, sometimes I get worked up when I’m wronged by people who I’d go to the ends of the Earth for without a second thought. In fact, I have walked the figurative miles only to be spat on when I get to the end of the Earth for them. It’s sad, really.

This villainises people.

Apparently, I refuse to take my own advice because more often than not—and despite my hard exterior and discernment—I look for the good in people. Then I have certain expectations, and when they aren’t met, disappointment and hurt feelings become the order of the day. Damnit, I annoy my own self. I should complain about that some more.

This villainises me. We really are our own worst enemy sometimes.

We can’t only have heroes in our stories, and we can’t all be heroes. We need the bad guys for balance and all that jazz.

That being said, as much as I complain about others, I’m sure they complain to their friends and loved ones about me. First of all, how could you not like me and how could you find anything about me to complain about? 🥲 I’m literally an amazing human!

That’s just how it goes, you know. Not everyone will like you and, to be honest, you’re not amazing to most. In fact, you’re the villain in some people’s story and they complain bitterly about you.

I say, be okay with that. You can’t win them all. That’s just life and how the cookie crumbles.

If you take nothing else away from this post, take this:

People will always do what they want to do regardless of the consequences or how it will impact you. The world hardens us that way. Additionally, as much as their actions may trigger our complaints, it’s a similar experience for them when it comes to us. They complain about you too!

That said, one of the greatest things you have control over is your response to people’s behaviours. You can also control how you present yourself to the world. Though it may not influence how you’re perceived—because people will only see what they want to—always work towards being a good human.

Let people think what they want to and let them do what they want to. No resistance.
